Here's 6 tips for things you can do with a new born baby from the dads at the Bedminster Compass Point, Satur-Dad's group.
1. Drawing: Try drawing simple high contrast black and white shapes and patterns on paper. Get large paper and a thick pen if you're feeling artistic. Your new born baby see high contrast black and white images the best and will best be able to focus on things about 10 inches away. Pay attention to the drawings they enjoy and try making more of the same, or mix things up with new designs...
3. Touch & Baby massage: Skin to skin contact with your baby helps to soothe them, sleep better and is an important part of bonding. Wait for a time when your baby is awake, not hungry, happy and ready to explore. Make sure the room is warm but not too hot (17 - 20 degrees C) and you may want leave their nappy on. Place them on the bed or a changing mat and make sure you warm up your hand up first. Use a simple oil like sunflower oil or olive oil and rub a little gently into their skin.
4. Flashing lights: Who doesn't like flash lights? Try moving a torch about the room and encourage your child to follow it with their eyes. Remember your baby will find high contrast images most appealing.
5. Music: Got any instruments at home? You can pick up an old keyboard, guitar or ukulele. Help them to press the keys by moving their hands. Even better sing to your baby. Try introducing your baby to your favourite band or artist. Don't feel like you have to listen to children songs. Bohemian rhapsody is sure to be a hit but avoid rock concerts as your baby will most likely find them too loud.
6. Talk, talk and more talk: If your sick of hearing yourself talk then you're doing the right amount if talking. Even though your baby may not be much of a conversationalist they are an excellent listener and will be absorbing every word to use at a later date. We do not recommend kite surfing until the age of 3. To find out more about your baby check out this free fathers operational manual for babies
